7. Djibrill Cisse
Cisse, perhaps more than any other player on this list was a victim of unfortunate circumstance. Signed for a then
club record £14 million by Gerard Houllier who was sacked before Cisse even had a training session at the club. He then badly broke his leg early in the season and an extraordinary performance in the FA Cup final aside, he never really did anything of note. Benitez perpetually played him on the wing - out of position for Cisse - and he could never properly adjust, which isn't surprising given the fact he is an archetype number 9. Cisse was never given the chances by Benitez that his talent deserved and he was eventually sold to Marseille to rebuild his career.
