Liverpool Transfers: 10 Players They Should Sign
5. Nathaniel Clyne
Why They Should Buy Him:
The introduction mentioned that Glen Johnson's departure left Liverpool without many options at right-back: Emre Can has shown that he's better suited to midfield, and Jon Flanagan has been experiencing injury problems. Having received great acclaim as part of a Southampton team that finished seventh in the league, Nathaniel Clyne would be ideal for filling that void.
He's a fast, marauding full-back, able to get forward and hurt opponents like Johnson in his heyday. He'd add balance to Liverpool's team with the similarly-rampaging Alberto Moreno at left-back. Additionally, he's arguably better at defending than Johnson was which will come as a relief to a Liverpool defence with the disconcerting ability to ship goals.
He's also only 24, so he'd be a good investment for the future.
Why They Shouldn't:
It'll be a struggle for the Reds to get Clyne. They've already had a £10 million bid for him rejected, so he's going to cost a lot. There'll probably be a prolonged transfer saga to boot, with other clubs sniffing around, and this clearly isn't an ideal scenario for the Anfield outfit.
Liverpool relied heavily on recruiting players from the Saints last season, too, and it didn't work out for them. That might give them reason to have second thoughts - what if Clyne didn't make the impact he's made for Southampton at Liverpool?
