The captains farewell appearance ended in one of the clubs most embarrassing defeats in recent memory. In reality though, this really shouldnt have been Gerrards last appearance in a Liverpool jersey.
There is a sense that Liverpool and Rodgers could not come up with a deal to satisfy their captain despite his incredibly loyal service to the club.
Steve McManaman, an ex-team mate of Gerrards claimed: He wont regret leaving and Liverpool will be fine without him. However, I think he should have stayed and retired at Liverpool.
Theres a player who would have signed if he had been offered a contract at the right time. I look at the midfielders there and I think Are the other midfielders better than him? and the answers a resounding no.The former England captain deserved to see out his Liverpool career on his own terms but it feels like Gerrard has been ushered out of the Anfield exit door against his wishes.
Only when Rodgers replaces Liverpool's greatest ever player with James Milner come the start of the 2015/16 campaign will he realise that he probably should have done everything in his power to persuade his captain to stay.
