Liverpool Fans' 8 Most Disliked Players Of The Modern Era

7. Paul Ince

Paul Ince has never been the most universally popular person- quite frankly he was asking for trouble as soon as he started calling himself the 'Guv'nor'- and he was most definitely one of Liverpool's less loved stars of recent times. Ince joined the Reds in 1997, by which point he was in his 30s and past his peak. That wasn't the problem, however, and his displays were respectable, if unspectacular. Ince had been a Manchester United star between 1989 and 1995, and given the pure hatred between them and Liverpool, there were many who were far from delighted to see him at Anfield. The former England international spent two years at the club under the reign of Roy Evans and, briefly, Gerard Houllier, and although, as mentioned, he was far from a disaster on the pitch, he won no major trophies there and failed to win round many fans. In May 1999 his last-gasp goal in front of the Kop earned the Reds a 2-2 draw against United, which did at least earn him some popularity. The fact that he scored a goal that almost robbed Sir Alex Ferguson's of the title would make most Liverpool players heroes, but such was Ince's unpopularity he didn't really go up in their estimations much at all.
