Liverpool Fans' 8 Most Disliked Players Of The Modern Era
6. Stan Collymore
The signing of Stan Collymore from Nottingham Forest was a British record transfer fee at the time (£8.5m), and there was much excitement on Merseyside. Collymore was known to be a complete enigma of a footballer, however, and it left many concerned that he would be more trouble than anything. It wasn't dissimilar to the recent signing of Mario Balotelli who, let's face it, could either become a superstar at Anfield or a complete disaster. Things started well for the striker, with a superb solo effort sealing an opening day victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, while his partnership with Robbie Fowler in attack was electrifying at times. His winner in the unforgettable 4-3 win over Newcastle in 1996 will also never be forgotten. The problem with Collymore was that he made no effort to bond with teammates off the pitch, and his lazy attitude on it did little to endear himself to the Anfield faithful. Neil Ruddock once said of him, "Stan only seemed to turn it on when he felt like it, and he didn't exactly endear himself to his team-mates when he was quoted in a magazine article as saying that he was disappointed with the service he was getting, and that, when he joined Liverpool, he expected to be surrounded by better players". That sort of behaviour does not go unnoticed on Merseyside, and the supporters grew more and more tired with his antics as time went on. He lasted just two years at the club in the end, and the fans were glad to see the back of him by the end.
