Liverpool Transfer News: Brendan Rodgers Eyes Fenerbahce Left Back Caner Erkin

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is mulling over a January swoop for Fenerbahce's Turkey international Caner Erkin to solve his left back problem.

A report in the Daily Star claims the 25-year-old, who has been at his current club since 2010, could be sold on the cheap when the winter transfer window opens. The Reds are seeking cover for Jose Enrique.

Erkin has made nine assists in the Turkish Super Lig this term so far, helping Fenerbahce to establish a strong lead at the top. Fellow Istanbul giants Besiktas and Galatasaray €“ coached by former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini €“ are seven and nine points behind them respectively.

Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League and level on points with Merseyside neighbours Everton, but have used four different players in the left back berth this term.

Spaniard Enrique has struggled with injury and is out until the New Year after undergoing knee surgery. Summer signings Aly Cissokho and Mamadou Sakho €“ who both have caps for France €“ have failed to impress in his absence, so youngster Jon Flanagan has got a run in the Reds XI.

Erkin's contract with Fenerbahce expires this summer, meaning the club will have to sell him at a cut price in January or risk losing him for nothing in the next window. He began his career with Manisaspor before moving to CSKA Moscow in 2007 and spent the 2009-10 campaign on loan at Galatasaray.
