Liverpool are favourites in the race to sign Swansea centre-back Ashley Williams, according to
the Mirror. Arsenal are also interested in the Welshman and chased his signature right up until the end of the January transfer window, but had their cash offer knocked back at the time. The Gunners are understood to retain an interest and will make a fresh offer in the summer, but it is Liverpool who have emerged as favourites. The 28-year old has been hugely impressive for the Swans this season but looks certain to leave in the summer, due to his ambition to play for a "big club" before it's too late. Williams, a massive Liverpool fan, idolised John Barnes when he was a kid growing up dreaming of a career in football, and the Merseysiders will be hoping that gives them the edge when it comes to him deciding his next career move. Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of Williams, who was impressed by him during the time the pair worked together at the Liberty Stadium. And now he could be set to go back to his old club with chequebook in hand in an attempt to pry the defender away from Wales. With Jamie Carragher set to retire at the end of the season, Liverpool do need a new centre-back, and Williams could be one of two Rodgers has his sights set on. The Northern Irishman has drawn up a list of targets in the position that also includes Brazilian international Dede, youngster Toby Alderweireld of Ajax and Feyenoord's Stefan de Vrij.
