At the grand age of 35, McAllister joined Liverpool on a free transfer - something that baffled every football fan across the country. The Scott had been released by a struggling Coventry City, however manager Gerard Houllier believed his experience would be vital to Anfield. How right the Frenchman was: McAllister took to the role in the centre of midfield and controlled so much play that Liverpool had. His ball control and ability to get out of the toughest tasks so simply was admired by all ages along with his unique passing ability. He was an integral part of Liverpool's treble winning side of 2001 and netted during the 5-4 Uefa Cup victory over Alaves along with sealing himself into Anfield folk-law when netting a last minute free kick from 44 yards out against Merseyside rivals Everton. Not only was he class in his own abilities, McAllister was very much a mentor for a young Steven Gerrard. He taught him the tricks of the trade, offering advice on and off the field and many accredit him for being the reason why Gerrard became one of Europe's top class players.
