3. The Quality Of Liverpool's Midfield
The days when Liverpool had a solid midfield are gone. Steven Gerrard isn't as young as he used to be and has lost that yard of pace, whilst the likes of Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso are long since departed. Youngster Jonjo Shelvey has started to make more regular appearances this season - he has featured 26 times for the club so far but his discipline and unstable temperament are concerns - he was sent off against Manchester United last year and almost came to blows with Sir Alex Ferguson, if you recall. Jordan Henderson has also become a more regular first-team player at the centre of Liverpool's midfield, but doesn't score enough goals - he has only managed four out of 74 overall appearances. Joe Allen has a similar problem in that he has yet to score for his club. Philippe Coutinho is a quick, goal-scoring midfielder who can also provide key assists for his team-mates - he would be a fantastic attacking-injection to Liverpool's otherwise flat midfield.
