Liverpool's 10 Greatest Champions League Victories

8. Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea (Liverpool Win 4-1 On Penalties) (2007)

Having lost to Liverpool in the semi-finals two years previously, Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side were desperate for revenge at the same stage in 2007. The two sides had contested a tight game at Stamford Bridge, but Joe Cole's goal had proved to be the difference. Many felt that it would be the Blues who would progress this time. Anfield was at its atmospheric, passionate best, and what followed was quite a game. After an understandably tense start, the match came alive midway through the first-half. A well-worked free-kick saw Gerrard tee up Daniel Agger inside the penalty area, and the Danish centre-back curled home a terrific finish to send the home fans into raptures. The tie was level. From that point on both sides had chances to snatch a goal and seal their place in the final. Didier Drogba and Michael Essien had opportunities for the visitors, while Peter Crouch and Kuyt went close for Liverpool. The game went into extra-time though. Kuyt thought he had scored a priceless second goal for the Reds, but his effort was chalked off for offside. In the end, it would be a penalty shootout that would decide who would progress. There was only one team in it, in truth, as Pepe Reina saved from Arjen Robben and Geremi, and the Reds scored all four of their efforts. Kuyt fired home the winning penalty, and Chelsea had been defeated again. Liverpool lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the final.
