Liverpool's 10 Greatest Champions League Victories

7. Real Madrid 0-1 Liverpool (2009)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtDwH6RH2UM When Liverpool were drawn against Real Madrid in the Champions League second round in 2008/09, it was a tough one to call. Juande Ramos' side had all the stars and the glamour, but Liverpool were a real force under Benitez. Nobody ever enjoyed being drawn against them in the competition around that time. The Reds travelled to Santiago Bernabeu knowing a draw would be a great result, but they went one better. In terms of entertainment value, it was hardly the most memorable 90 minutes of football. Neither side created a huge amount, but Madrid deserved more criticism because they were the home side. Barring a tame effort from Raul and a fizzing shot from Robben, los Blancos didn't really threaten at any point. Alonso tested Iker Casillas from the halfway line, while Torres also forced his international teammate into a smart stop from a tight angle. With the game seemingly edging towards a 0-0 draw, Liverpool struck. Fabio Aurelio's terrific 82nd-minute free-kick from out wide was met by the unmarked head of Yossi Benayoun, who was surely one of the most unlikely scorers of such a goal. The Israeli wheeled away in delight, and it was enough to earn a priceless victory. The second-leg at Anfield, as you'll real about shortly, was even more memorable.
