If Carragher was the ultimate gritty centre-back, Hyypia was one of the most elegant, calm defenders you are ever likely to see. Signed from Willem II in 1999 for just £2.5m, the Finn became an all-time Liverpool legend during his decade on Merseyside. For seven seasons in a row he virtually played every Premier League game, barring the odd minor injury, and during that time he was fantastic. He read the game brilliantly, was dominant in the air and was a terrific captain until Steven Gerrard replaced him in the role in 2003. His partnership with Stephane Henchoz, in particular during the Reds' cup treble-winning season of 2000/01, was magnificent, while a few years later his partnership with Carragher was equally formidable. He was a big reason why Liverpool became one of Europe's most respected teams between 2005 and 2009, and he also showcased his attacking qualities by scoring vital European goals against Juventus and Arsenal during that time. His emotional goodbye to the fans after his final game in 2009 will never be forgotten, and his 523 appearances were, more often than not, faultless.
