Man City Transfers: 5 January Replacements For Joe Hart

4. Alex McCarthy (Reading)

Alex McCarthy is another goalkeeper that I have a great deal of time for, but he is not currently playing within the Premier League. This in itself is a bit strange, given his superb performances for Reading at the latter end of last season. McCarthy is now 23 and could well be ready for this challenge; he has already been named in an England squad but has yet to win a full England cap. The fact that he is a top English player and we don't have enough of them playing in the EPL means he would be an attractive option, and it would also make it easier for Roy Hodgson to take him to the World Cup in Brazil. Nevertheless, going from playing to Reading to a Man City team that is expected to win the league would be a huge step up, and a big test of his character to be a top player.
