9. Sheringham And Solskjaer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr74honv-i4 These two players epitomise one of Fergies great strengths, which is he isnt afraid of making a brave or offbeat transfer decision and he has an eye for a bargain. Sheringham was brought in the aftermath of Cantonas retirement. Sheringham was a classy player but he was by no means an obvious choice for Cantonas replacement. He was an outside bet where marquee signings such as Juninho, Zidane and Batistuta looked more likely. An intriguing (or frightening if you are a United fan) historical side note, are the other players who were rumoured to be interesting United as a Cantona replacement. These included Michael Bridges and a young Crewe midfielder Danny Murphy. Fergie chose Sheringham though and this shows how sometimes he just goes with his instinct on how a player might fit into the team and the whole Old Trafford ethos. Sheringham was a good player for United and he proved an astute signing, particularly on a certain night in Barcelona. Solskjærs name will forever be linked with Sheringham because of the 1999 Champions League final and their shared exploits on that famous night. He would also become a club legend with his reputation as a super sub and affectionately dubbed the baby faced assassin. Solskjaers career also shows how Ferguson is able to foster great loyalty in his players. He can convince a player the glory of the club is greater than personal glory and this shines through with Solskjaer, as his attitude was excellent and he seemed perfectly happy in his super-sub role.
