8. Peter Schmeichel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzfConGQl8Y The Great Dane, purchased for just
£500,000 from Brondy, could be argued to be one of the best signings ever in the history of football. It is a challenge to think of better, in terms of cost and overall achievement whilst at a club. This eccentric, fiery, giant of a goalkeeper with a penchant for scoring is a club legend and simply one of the best goalkeepers to have played the game. In terms of particular memorable moments, I recall a disallowed goal against Wimbledon and countless improbable saves and some great ones against Newcastle at St James Park. He sometimes seemed able to keep United in the game with the force of his considerable personality alone. A nice urban legend exists, that Fergie used to phone round hotels before away games to make sure that the beds would be big enough to fit the Schmeichels mighty frame. He was certainly a critical figure in Uniteds success, that once allied with other key signings like Cantona and Keane, made United for several years pretty much unstoppable.
