Man Utd: 5 Reasons Fans Should Be Optimistic About The Season Ahead

1. The Defence

Years have gone by now without United signing a central midfielder, making it the central worry for United fans, once again, ahead of the new season. But it has often been the defence that has let the club down over the past few seasons. That's not to say they have been poor, and although there were a number of shocking scorelines in last seasons campaign the main problem has usually been injuries. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are, as they have proven in the opening two games of this season, two of the best defenders in the world. Their partnership is immense, but both have struggled with seriousinjuries as they entered their 30s. With the major troubles seemingly behind them, a season-long partnership could be decisive when it comes to determining the title winners. They won't both play 38 games, but if De Gea can become comfortable with a specific pair playing in front of him it will do the team a world of good. Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Rafael (currently injured) are also known to be on the injury-prone side. Johnny Evans is no exception either. In fact, only Patrice Evra can claim to be fit 99% of the time for United. But, barring any more bad luck in this department, United have a real chance at not needing Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick to fill in at the back this time. Strengthening both their defence and midfield, as well as David Moyes' chances of silverware in his debut season as Manchester United manager.
