Man Utd News: Phil Jones Out For An Extra 8 Weeks

Manchester United’s defensive problems have taken another serious knock after Phil Jones left the club's training ground on crutches.

Mail Online, Manchester United€™s defensive problems have taken another serious knock after Phil Jones left the club's training ground on crutches. The 20-year-old was seen leaving Carrington on Thursday and later went under the knife to repair the damage, as confirmed by an official club statement, released on United's website:

€œPhil Jones has had surgery on a knee meniscus tear sustained in training that will require six to eight weeks' rehabilitation.€
Phil Jones joined Manchester United last January from Blackburn Rovers in a deal quoted by the Mail to be worth £16.5 million. The defender has made 29 appearances for the club since his arrival. Manchester United have only just seen the return of Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand, who both appeared in United€™s 3-2 win over Southampton last weekend. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is still without Chris Smalling and will now be without Jones for at least the quoted six to eight weeks. Phil Jones was originally ruled out of United€™s first three games with back spasms, and according to the BBC, was said to be close to returning when he damaged his knee. This new injury set-back is likely to see Jones miss three Champions League group games against Galatasaray at Old Trafford on 19 September, CFR Cluj-Napoca away on 2nd October and the 23th October match against Sporting Braga in Portugal. He will also miss up to six Premier League games including United's trip to Liverpool and the away match at Stamford Bridge on 28th October.
