Manchester United manager David Moyes is exercising caution over the future of Wayne Rooney and will take things "step by step", according to the BBC. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to rivals Chelsea for much of the summer with United rejecting the Blue's overtures during the recent transfer window. However, questions over the striker's future persist with rumours suggesting Jose Mourinho's side are lining up another bid in January. Rooney also reacted angrily to ITV reporter Gabriel Clarke's question as to whether or not he remained happy at Old Trafford following Tuesday's Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen. The former Everton star refused to directly answer the question and manager Moyes has been equally coy on the matter. Rooney's current contract is set to expire in 2015 and asked if there was any possibility of an extension, the United chief responded:
"I think we just go step by step."
United and their supporters will be hoping Rooney's recent run of good form continues on Sunday as the champions travel to the Etihad for their crunch Manchester derby with City. Rooney has scored three times in two games and his brace against Leverkusen midweek saw him become only the fourth player in the Red Devil's history to score 200 goals for the club. And Moyes is expecting his star man to step up to the plate again at the weekend. He said of Rooney:
"He's played really well and we want him to maintain that. If anything, I'm asking him to step up again. I want him to keep getting better. "If he could score another two goals at the weekend, that would be the next step forward, wouldn't it?
