Man Utd Transfers: 10 Flops Who Must Follow David Moyes Out Of Old Trafford

8. Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling was an £11 million signing by previous United boss Sir Alex Ferguson four years ago, but things have not gone well for the 24-year-old Englishman since, with a series of problems blighting his Red Devils career - both on and off the pitch. Smalling has repeatedly struggled over the past few years to lay any sort of serious claim for a starring role at centre-back and has not yet lived up to his early potential after joining from Fulham. With both Ferdinand and Vidic set to leave, you really do have to wonder if he has the potential to step into their shoes on a long-term basis, or whether United should go for someone with more pedigree. Smalling recently upset his now-ex manager David Moyes after being photographed on a night out at 3am when he was out injured, and caused controversy by dressing as a suicide bomber at a fancy dress party. Arsenal have been linked with a shock £13 million bid recently and the new United manager must decide whether to stick with the troubled defender or cash in a profit on a player yet to establish himself. Not many United fans will be sad to see him go - even if it is to a rival like Arsenal.
