Having worked with Louis van Gaal extensively at international level over the past several seasons, the new United boss rates the current Roma midfielder as highly as any player in the modern game. The former Dutch national coach earmarked Strootman as one of the three most important players for his Oranje side at the World Cup alongside Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie, but the anterior cruciate ligament injury Strootman suffered put an end to his season and World Cup dreams earlier this year. Strootman hopes to find himself back playing at some point after the start of the new Serie A season, with heavy speculation that van Gaal could swoop for the player in January regardless of who he signs this summer.
