Man Utd Transfers: 10 Midfield Alternatives To Arturo Vidal

3. Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg)

In a home World Cup which ended in misery for Brazil, the only other bright spark in the team apart from their talismanic Neymar came through the performances of Wolfsburg holding midfielder Luiz Gustavo. The former Bayern Munich player's work rate and appetite for breaking up opposition attacks did not go unnoticed, and with his exceptional performances standing out it was inevitable that he would be linked with a move away from his current club. Gustavo is a top tackler who offers the qualities United need in midfield, offering something that the likes of Maroune Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley can't. The Brazilian is capable of stealing the ball and quickly launching counter attacks, which is a quality van Gaal will be looking for next season if he is to play in the style he favours at Old Trafford. Whilst Gustavo doesn't rack up goals and assists, he is instead a player who will shore up the United defence, letting other players go and take the glory.
