Man Utd Transfers: 10 Midfield Alternatives To Arturo Vidal
4. Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich)
Said to be unsettled at Bayern Munich, Javi Martinez could be an option for Manchester United to look at given he should be available for a similar price to Arturo Vidal, though he does more of a defensive job. Whilst Vidal is more of a box to box player, 25-year-old Spaniard Martinez is another who prefers to sit deeper and let other players do the damage in the offensive stakes. He has proven capable of filling in at centre half too for Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, as a player in a growing trend of defensive midfielders able to slot in at the back - with these players usually preferred for their ability to pass the ball out of defence. After a successful season under Jupp Heynckes in 2012/13 as a starting central midfielder, Martinez is thought to be hopeful of leaving Munich this summer because of Guardiola's plans for him in the club's tactical set up. With a big bank balance, United would be more than capable of offering the Spaniard a way out of Germany and an opportunity to play in his preferred position.
