The Sunderland goalkeeper looks almost certain to leave the Stadium of Light this summer, having failed to keep the club in the Premier League under the dismal stewardship of David Moyes.

Placed in an advantageous light by virtue of his position, Pickford improved virtually every aspect of his game since breaking into the side 18 months earlier in a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in which he was comfortably the team's best player.

In times of relative suffering for Manchester Utd, David de Gea has been a shining light, earning plaudits as one of the very best goalkeepers in the world having navigated a challenging start to life in the Premier League.

He suffered undue criticism in part due to his inexperience and hefty transfer fee, but quickly found his footing, particularly under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson in his League-winning final season with the club.

At 23, Pickford is two years older than de Gea was when he debuted for United, but young enough to be in a keen investment for Jose Mourinho to mould into a future legend for the club. The £30million price tag may once have seemed insane for a young stopper, but with de Gea's fee set at £65million, it's loose change.
