It's a bit of a stretch to claim that Cristiano Ronaldo's annual temper tantrum last week means that he is imminently set for a return to Old Trafford, particularly given that Old Trafford is now the home of Jose Mourinho, the ex-Real manager with whom he didn't exactly get along last time they shared the same team.

Transfer speculation is all about stretching the bounds of logic and reason, though, and the fact is that there are only about two or three football clubs in the world who could offer the Portuguese a viable escape route, one of them being Manchester United.

Reservations over tying up precious funds in a 33-year-old who may well fancy a move to China or MLS in a couple of seasons are well-founded, but they're also easily shot down by pointing out that he is arguably the best player in the world (and, at the very worst, the second best).

Great individuals does not a team make, granted, but take out Leicester City's unlikely triumph two years ago and it's almost impossible to think of a Premier League-winning team that didn't have at least one superstar.
