As well as a defensive midfield enforcer, United also need a diamond-in-the-rough style of player. United are missing that touch of creative brilliance in their midfield and are without that attacking sparkle now that Cristiano Ronaldo has vacated the number 7 jersey at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick is doing his best to create the chances from the centre of United's midfield with his four assists this season, and some of his passing has been superb, but United still need someone who can make a precision-perfect pass cut through a defence. A player like Luka Modric could achieve that. The Croatian may only have signed for Real Madrid last summer but he has been a complete flop in La Liga since his £33 million move from Tottenham. So much so, he was voted "worst Spanish signing of the season" last month, and with the likes of Xabi Alonso and Mesut Ozil keeping him out of the side, the former Spurs midfielder could be prepared to make a return to the Premier League, with Man United thought to be an interested party. He would be a terrific addition to United's midfield, which has been rocked by injuries of late to key players such as Shinji Kagawa, Darren Fletcher and Anderson. Source(s):
