Man Utd Transfers - 5 Centre-Back Alternatives To Mats Hummels
3. Jan Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen put himself on several club's radar this summer when his agent announced the defender might quit Tottenham this summer. Manchester United and Barcelona are among the interested parties, with Vertonghen establishing himself as one of the Premier League's best centre-backs in recent seasons. Signed in 2012 from Ajax, the Belgian international had a hugely-successful debut season at White Hart Lane, and was voted into the Team of the Year. He represented his country at this summer's World Cup and played all five of Belgium's games at left-back, though he prefers to ply his trade in the centre of defence. For similar reasons to Mangala, Vertonghen would be a fantastic signing for United considering he is multi-functional. With Evra and Buttner leaving the club, only Luke Shaw remains on the left side of the Red Devil's defence. Signing Vertonghen would kill two birds with one stone given van Gaal's need for a new centre-half as well. It remains to be seen however if Spurs would be willing to do business with United, considering the two haven't always had the best working relationship following the signing of Dimitar Berbatov in 2008. The Londoners too would be loath to lose one of their best players, and it would likely take a sizable bid to bring them round the negotiating table.
