It seems as though Thomas Vermaelen has been persistently linked with a move to Manchester United this summer with gossip columns tipping him to join United almost incessantly. As of yet, however, nothing has come to fruition in regards to a transfer, though reports suggest the Red Devils are about to step things up a gear after their Hummels set-back. Vermaelen is currently out of favour at Arsenal and only played 14 Premier League games last season, despite the fact he is the club's captain. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger prefers the partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at the heart of his defence, meaning the Belgian international has not had a look-in. He would probably jump at the chance to join United therefore, where he is likely to get regular playing time on a week-to-week basis given the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. A versatile defender, Vermaelen can also play at left-back if required, meaning he could also provide useful cover for Luke Shaw.
