Man Utd Transfers - 5 Centre-Back Alternatives To Mats Hummels
2. Jan Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen put a number of clubs on alert back in February this year when he indicated he could quit Tottenham Hotspur if they missed out on Champions League football for next season. Spurs finished sixth in the end, and will not be competing in European football's top tournament. And now, the 27-year-old is waiting to see who replaces the sacked Tim Sherwood at White Hart Lane before committing his future to the Lilywhites. With Vertonghen looking deeply unsettled at Spurs, United could take advantage by making an offer for the impressive Belgian international, who has emerged as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League in recent seasons. Though the Red Devils will not be competing in the Champions League either next season, they hope to persuade top targets that their recent fall from grace is just a temporary blip, and that they will be back at the top again next year. Vertonghen has proven himself as a leader on the pitch, captaining Ajax, and would make the ideal replacement for one of either Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic next season.
