Man Utd Transfers: 5 Defenders Fergie Should Target

2. Davide Santon

Despite Newcastle United's rough form this season, Davide Santon's performances have been a source of comfort for the Toon Army. The Italian has developed into one of the best left-backs in the English Premier League and remains an option in his old position of right-back too. Yet the situation remains strange€”the transfer window has been rife with speculation regarding him leaving for Milan (via Sky Sports), while Alan Pardew himself insisted the Italian is going nowhere (via Goal.com). The Guardian suggest the Magpies are seemingly on the cusp of securing young, promising left-back Massadio Haidara from Nancy. This reinforces the position, and perhaps makes Santon expendable for the correct (and high) price. Likelihood? Geographically, this is the closest premiere left-back to Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson will have seen Santon play a number of times for Newcastle United and Internazionale, meaning his personal knowledge of the full-back will be right up to scratch. The speculation regarding Santon's future is unsettling for Newcastle fans. 6/10
