3. Victor Wanyama
Moving along now to the next area of the pitch that is most in need of improvement - midfield. United have been badly lacking a quality defensive midfielder for years and the frailty in the centre of the park has often been ruthlessly exposed by world class opposition, as was the case when Barcelona triumphed in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals. Michael Carrick was not nominated for the PFA Player of the Year Award by accident and is a sublime midfielder, but he needs some help. He has often been paired this season with either Ryan Giggs or Tom Cleverley - the former of which is nearing retirement and the latter lacking in experience. Were he to be partnered with someone a bit more defensively minded, United's midfield would take on a more resolute appearance. Celtic's Victor Wanyama
was scouted by Ferguson earlier this year while Moyes was interested in bringing him to Everton. Now United could have it all their own way if Moyes makes the Kenyan one of his first buys. A tough tackler of the ball and endowed with versatility, Wanyama can also play at centre-back which could prove to solve two of United's biggest weaknesses next season. At £10 million, the midfielder also represents the sort of shrewd, small-money investment Moyes has been accustomed with in recent years.
