Man Utd Transfers: 5 Greatest Foreign Imports

5. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Appearances: 366 Goals: 126 Arriving at United in the summer of 1996 as a relative unknown, it was fair to say that the name 'Solskjaer' did not set the United fan's pulses racing. Perceivably bought after failing to sign Alan Shearer, many assumed that Solskjaer would be mere back up to the likes of Andy Cole and Eric Cantona. However in his first season alone Solskjaer scored 18 goals in the Premier League, helping United to secure the crown. The Baby Faced Assassin endeared himself to the United faithful through countless excellent displays and his shy, modest persona. Throughout his time at United, Solskjaer was heralded a 'Super-Sub', blessed with the ability to come off the bench and change a game in an instant. It was this uncanny ability that made Solskjaer so likeable, for he epitomised United's 'never give up' attitude, frequently scoring in the final minutes of games when the opposition had tired. This ability was never demonstrated so candidly than in the 1998/1999 treble season. Three instances particularly spring to mind: Firstly, in an away game against Nottingham Forest where United had already secured the three points, Solskjaer came off the bench to score 4 goals in 12 minutes to help United to an 8-1 victory, breaking the clubs highest away win record in the process. This illustrated his desire to make an impact on a game, not merely just take part in it. Solskjaer did not stop there. Again in 1998/1999 in an F.A Cup 4th round tie against Liverpool at Old Trafford, United had fallen behind to a third minute goal from Michael Owen. Throughout the match United continuously created chance after chance, yet it seemed as if it would not be United's day. Solskjaer was introduced from the bench to seal an injury time winner making it 2-1. Yet, United fans will always remember Solskjaer for his Champions League heroics in Barcelona. His finish in the 94th minute secured both the Champions League and the treble for Manchester United, making them the only English club to have ever achieved this feat. Therefore for his crucial part played in United's greatest ever season, and his overall United career, Solskjaer makes this list. Source: Manchester United
