Man Utd Transfers: 7 Ridiculous January Targets Moyes Definitely Shouldn't Sign

2. Christian Benteke

Given the worrying injuries sustained by Robin van Persie recently as well as continued doubts over Wayne Rooney's future, United have been tipped to enter the market for a striker in January. And one target the Red Devils have been linked with is Aston Villa's Christian Benteke, who set the Premier League alight in his debut season last term after arriving from Genk. The Belgian international netted 19 league goals to spare his side from relegation and, after handing in a transfer request over the summer, put a number of top clubs on alert. Benteke would eventually backtrack and sign a new deal at Villa Park, but that has not dissuaded the likes of Man United, Arsenal and Spurs's interest. All three are keen on the striker, but would be foolish to follow up with a concrete bid considering Benteke's form has badly waned this season. The 23-year-old has been afflicted with a case of 'second season syndrome' and is failing to build upon his heroics from the last campaign, having only managed four league goals and struggled for fitness this term.
