Man Utd Transfers: Fergie's 10 Greatest Foreign Imports

10. Mikael Silvestre (France) and Park Ji-Sung (South Korea)

park ji sung A great player doesn€™t necessarily have to be flamboyant or flashy. Indeed, for every €˜star player€™ that a team possesses there are a number of dependable stalwarts capable of putting in a consistent performance fixture after fixture. These two, tying for inclusion on this list, are perfect examples of such players. French defender Mikael Silvestre arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 1999, a few months after their Treble success, which he had been indirectly involved in, having played for Italian side Inter Milan, whom United beat on their way to Champions League glory. Though initially struggling to adapt to the English game, the Frenchman became a mainstay of the United defence for nine years, capable of playing at both left back and centre back. He ended up making 249 league appearances in a red shirt, before competition from younger defenders such as Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra saw him move to Arsenal in 2008. Now a free agent, however, he is once again training with the team as he seeks a move to a lower division club in his twilight years. Korean midfielder Park Ji-Sung arrived at the club from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2005, amid rumours that his signature was merely a marketing ploy to extend the club€™s appeal in the Far East. Park quickly quashed these rumours, building up a reputation for himself as a big game player in a midfield where he could play either in the centre or on the wing, scoring some important goals in the process. The Korean accumulated 134 league appearances in seven years with the Red Devils, before choosing to make the move to Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2012, having found first team opportunities more limited in his final season. The first and so far only Asian to have played for the team on a regular basis, Park€™s effective replacement, Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa, has big boots to fill.
