When Louis Van Gaal took over at Manchester United, it was somewhat expected that the Dutchman would plunder his international squad to bring some of the best players to Old Trafford and kick off the rejuvenation project needed after last season's disaster. Sadly for United fans, mooted moves for Arjen Robben, Ron Vlaar, Jordie Clasie and Memphis Depay have so far amounted to nothing. But there may be cause for celebration in Manchester again as one of Holland's most bruising enforcers is apparently in talks over a 10m move from AC Milan. That would represent a significantly impressive coup, considering De Jong's pedigree, but it's not surprising considering the state of Milan's finances currently. According to Goal, United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward met with up with the defensive midfielder's epresentatives in London yesterday to discuss a move. And the good news for the club - who are in desperate need of new arrivals to reinforce the squad - is that De Jong has made positive noises having already worked with the boss at Holland. Does that now mean that the protracted saga surrounding the future of Arturo Vidal is now over? It's not certain of course, but the smartest money would be on the Chilean staying in Turin, and Van Gaal depending on a central midfield base of Ander Herrera and De Jong to cover the injured Michael Carrick. Meanwhile, the move might also pave the way for a January move for Kevin Strootman, who is still injured and wouldn't represent a smart summer move - in case of extended damage - but who would probably be back on the table after half a season with De Jong shoring up the defensive line.
