The 25-year old Argentinian impressed for the Portuguese side last season despite suffering heartbreak both domestically and in the Europa League, and has been on United's radar for quite some time, with some rumours even going as far as to claim a deal for the attacking midfielder is
already complete. Heralded as a player endowed with South American technique and style, but also comfortable with the rigours of European football, Gaitan can play either as a left or right-footed midfielder and has been commended for his strength and ability to beat defenders in the air. He's also been praised for his distribution and ability to pick out holes in the defence with incision-perfect passes and in many regards possesses many similar traits to Paul Scholes.
