Man Utd Transfers: Predicting Louis van Gaal's First 10 Signings

9. Mats Hummels

While our need of a new left-back is obvious, so too is our need of a new centre-half with Nemanja Vidic off to Italy and speculation swirling over the future of colleague Rio Ferdinand. Jeremy Cross of the Daily Star suggests Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels is on van Gaal's radar as he prepares to take the vacant Old Trafford hot seat, with a £20 million bid being lined up. Hummels left Bayern Munich just as van Gaal was appointed manager of the Bavarian outfit in 2009, but they could finally be united together this summer should Dortmund be prepared to sell up. van Gaal and Hummels have a certain familiarity with each other which would mean the signing of the 25-year-old defender would make a lot of sense, while fans will enjoy the German centre-half's attacking style of play - something van Gaal actively encourages from his sides.
