Man Utd Transfers: Predicting Louis van Gaal's First 10 Signings

5. Kevin Strootman

Yet another long-term target of ours is Kevin Strootman, the mercurial Roma midfielder who popped up on our radar in the last summer window when former club PSV Eindhoven were listening to offers of as little as £7 million. Instead of ending up at Old Trafford however, Strootman plumped for a move to Italy, where he has flourished until injury curtailed his season back in January. This summer could be a different story however, and we could finally land our man, with van Gaal looking to bring his fellow Dutchman to the Theatre of Dreams having managed him at international level, according to Ed Maylon of the Mirror. It would be no surprise at all if United went Dutch this summer and Strootman could be one of a series of Netherlands internationals making their way to Manchester should van Gaal get the job as anticipated. Strootman is a fantastic passer of the ball and in that sense would be a good replacement for Michael Carrick, who hasn't been at his best this season and at 32 is starting to look past his best. The 24-year-old midfield man could comfortably slot into a 4-3-3 formation preferred by van Gaal or the 4-2-3-1 system utilized by David Moyes and interim boss Ryan Giggs, and has even been dubbed 'the Dutch Roy Keane' by some observers. Considering we've never replaced the actual Roy Keane, Strootman would be an ideal transfer target for us this summer, and one who would appear to fit into van Gaal's style of play.
