Man Utd Transfers: United Reignite Interest in Everton Star

Could Seamus Coleman finally be the man to fill the void at right-back?

Manchester United are interested in signing Everton full-back Seamus Coleman this summer, reigniting a potential deal that former manager David Moyes was believed to keen on during his time at the club. According to Sky Sports, United are yet to make any formal contact, but Louis Van Gaal is a firm admirer of the Irish international after witnessing another season of strong displays. Winger Antonio Valencia filled United's right-back berth for much of the 2014/15 campaign and although the Ecuadorian did an admirable job, it has been a problem position for a number of years. Rafael has been unable to prove himself after months of further frustrating fitness issues, while the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are much better suited to the centre of defence, despite each having played at right-back on a number of occasions in the past. Coleman, who is now 26 years of age and entering his peak as professional footballer, played 35 times for Everton in the Premier League last season. In 2013/14 he was named in the PFA Team of the Year and his surging runs forward would be a good fit for Van Gaal's 'philosophy'. Persuading Everton to sell may not be straightforward though. Manager Roberto Martinez has previously insisted the club is no longer interested in letting its best players go, while relations between Old Trafford and Goodison Park were severely strained as a result of the way the captures of David Moyes and Marouane Fellaini were handled in 2013. In other transfer news, reports suggest that United are now in advanced stages of a deal to sign Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton, which could even be confirmed as soon as this coming Wednesday.
