Man Utd vs Real Sociedad: 5 Big Decisions Moyes Must Get Right

5. Who To Play At Centre-Back

One of the more immediate problems concerning David Moyes ahead of Wednesday's visit of Real Sociedad is who to partner in central defence. United's defensive record hasn't exactly been great this season, leaking four against derby rivals Manchester City to go with the 10 they have conceded from their first eight Premier League games. Moyes is going to have to find a way to plug these gaps and he will likely be without Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as he figures out a way to achieve this. The two stalwarts were absent from United's draw with Southampton at the weekend after suffering minor knocks and aren't likely to be risked tomorrow evening. That could mean a rare start for either Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling or both. Neither have played regularly under Moyes this season, with the former starting just two games to date and the latter clocking up nine minutes from his last two appearances. An alternative is to bring in Phil Jones, who has featured for 90 minutes in his side's last three games, and his selection, probably alongside Evans at the heart of defence, would seem the most sensible option. Either way, these three defenders are being called upon at a time of crisis and all must step up to the plate if required to do so, but equally, it is Moyes's job to pick the right partnership.
