3. Florian Thauvin
Marseille, like Arsenal, were also big spenders on transfer deadline day. While they may not have spent as much as the Gunners, the deal to bring Florian Thauvin to the Stade Velodrome still represented a large outlay around £12.5million. Thauvin had caught the eye of many clubs around Europe during the summer. In particular, his match-winning performances at this summer's under-20 World Cup, including a brace in the semi-final win over Ghana, caught the attention of many scouts. Lille, his club during the tournament, were eagerly awaiting his return delighted they had finally replaced Eden Hazard. Thauvin had joined Lille from Bastia in January of this year, but was immediately loaned back for the rest of the season. Consequently his move to Marseille this summer has been met with negativity by the French media, who are appalled at the player for leaving Lille without even playing a game. The fact that Marseille were willing to pay 5 times what Lille did for Thauvin tells you how highly they rate him. He is a brilliant playmaker and a player that Marseille will look to build their club around in the coming years. Arsenal will need to be wary of Thauvin's late runs into the box as more often than not they lead to the French star finding the back of the net.
