Three goals from Wayne Rooney and two from Javier Hernandez ensured another comfortable win for Manchester United, who kept up their almost supernatural form up against Bolton. Fergusons men never looked in danger, and any chances the Lancashire side could get on target were stopped by David de Gea, who looked alert and athletic. Boltons tough start to the season continued as the Trotters welcomed high-flying Manchester United to the Reebok Stadium, attracting their biggest crowd of the past five years in the process. They would certainly be up against it; United were in irresistible form and looked threatening from every position with Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney and Nani in particular looking impossible to deal with. In addition to this, Bolton havent won against the Red Devils since 2007, when a Nicolas Anelka strike gave them the three points. Owen Coyle made two changes to the team that lost 3-1 to Liverpool two weeks ago; Dedryck Boyata, signed on loan from Manchester City, replaced Gretar Steinsson in defence, and Mark Davies was handed his first start of the season ahead of Fabrice Muamba. Kevin Davies led the attacking line and would be looking to use his aerial strength and ability to put pressure on David de Gea. The Spanish keepers start to his Manchester United career had certainly been a nervy one, but he has perhaps surprisingly made the most saves of any Premiership keeper this season with 17. United were looking to keep pace with rivals City who had beaten Wigan 3-0 earlier in the day courtesy of a Sergio Aguero hat trick. There were two changes from the Manchester United team that hammered Arsenal 8-2 in their last match; Jonny Evans was pushed into right back by the return of Rio Ferdinand so Chris Smalling missed out, and the injury of Danny Welbeck meant the return of Javier Hernandez to the starting line up he partnered Wayne Rooney up front. Both sides started with 4-4-2 formations. The game started with a number of stoppages; two United youngsters felt the force of challenges from no-nonsense Bolton veterans. First Phil Jones collided with Paul Robinson and then Tom Cleverley felt the force of a Kevin Davies challenge that kept him sidelined for a few minutes and later forced him to be replaced by Michael Carrick. United only needed 10 men to take the lead though, the free kick was played quickly to Nani who crossed low from the far right, and it was the Mexican Javier Hernandez on his first start of the season who provided the finish from close range. Any Bolton fans hoping United would have taken their foot off the gas after the hammering of Arsenal would have been disappointed it had taken just five minutes for the Red Devils to score. The Trotters could have equalised though, chaos in the United box after some good play from Klasnic allowed Chris Eagles to get a shot away that was blocked by Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans then got a good block away to deny Kevin Davies. Martin Petrovs follow up shot rolled wide. The dark cloud that descended on the Reebok Stadium may have been a hint at what was to come, Manchester United were certainly looking like the home team and looked likely to cause Bolton problems all game. Klasnic then wasted a good chance as he found himself on his own from close range but couldnt get a clean connection. Chris Eagles tried to test David de Gea with a long range effort that flew wide of the Spaniards right post. Bolton were responding well to their early deficit, de Gea was tested again from a well struck Ivan Klasnic effort, but he was equal to it and made a fantastic acrobatic save.
Manchester United then doubled the lead, a good ball came in from right back Phil Jones, Javier Hernandez couldnt get anything on it but Rooney managed to just poke the ball into the ground and beyond Jääskeläinen. 2-0 United though they hadnt exactly dominated. Phil Jones was turning out to be a great attacking threat down the right side. He made the third goal with a terrific powerful run that left Zat Knight sprawling. Jääskeläinen made a good save from the initial effort but Rooney followed it up to roll into the empty net. Two goals in five minutes for the in-form England striker, youd be mad to bet against him scoring a second consecutive Premier League hat trick. Fergusons men could have been four up shortly afterwards, Hernandez tucked in another short range finish but it was rightly ruled out by the linesman for offside. A great ball swung in from Chris Eagles found Kevin Davies, but the striker couldnt get anything on it. A small crumb of consolation for Coyles men was that they had created chances, and if it wasnt for the ruthlessness of United they could well still have been in the game. A good move from United was forged by some good passing between Anderson and Ashley Young, the winger put in a good cross but Hernandez couldnt quite get enough on it to direct the ball goalwards. Nani collided with Phil Jones just before the interval, and his head injury caused a brief stoppage. The Portuguese winger was straight back into the game though, he had caused Paul Robinson problems throughout the first half and did so again by cutting inside and getting a fierce shot away from a tight angle, it went wide of the far post however. Andre Mariner brought the opening half to an end after 49 minutes of football. Although Bolton had created chances, United had never looked in danger with Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez looking far more threatening than Davies and Klasnic. The former had battled hard, but with Rio Ferdinand back in the Manchester United line-up, they looked even more solid than usual. HALF TIME It was Ivan Klasnic, Boltons biggest attacking threat this season who had the first shot of the second half, his low, bouncing effort was well held by David de Gea, after some good work from Mark Davies in the Bolton midfield. He was called into action a few minutes later by Boltons other striker Kevin Davies who got a good header away but couldnt direct it away from the centre of the goal and it was plucked from the air by de Gea. Jääskeläinen was next to be tested; he made a stop from a vicious Nani free kick, though if it had taken a touch from a United player it would have surely been beyond the Finnish keeper. He was then forced into action by another free kick, this time from the left foot of Anderson but he got two strong hands to it to tip the ball wide. Martin Petrov then got a shot away; it was a good effort but dipped just over the bar. David de Gea then showed great instinct and vision to send a long ball almost the length of the pitch to Javier Hernandez, he found himself on the right side of Jussi Jääskeläinen and got a shot away into what would have been an empty net but Nigel Reo-Coker was there to hack it off the line. Not to be disheartened, Hernandez then made it four with another poachers effort. Nani went down in the area, and amidst penalty appeals Michael Carrick took possession, firing in a cross-come-shot that Chicharito tucked home. David de Gea was finally beaten straight afterwards from a powerful effort by Reo-Coker taken from the corner of the 18 yard box, but unfortunately for the Trotters it cannoned back off the bar. Wayne Rooney then made it a second hat trick in two Premier League games, Nani ran unchallenged down the right before cutting it back to Wayne Rooney, who coolly slotted it into the corner. This strike made it 8 in 4 for Rooney, a fantastic return. The striker then almost turned provider as he put in a first time cross to Hernandez, but the Mexican couldnt get his hat trick despite hurling himself at the ball, and the cross drifted harmlessly wide of the far post. Bolton were sinking without trace. They hadnt performed badly at all, and it is commendable that they had attempted to take the game to the team in red, but with United in their current form, this approach is only ever going to end in disaster. Tuncay Sanli was introduced in place of Klasnic as Bolton tried to make the scoreline look more respectable, the Turk got on the end of a Martin Petrov cross but couldnt direct his header anywhere near the target. The former Stoke man was looking lively however, and got another shot away that was again saved de Gea. Javier Hernandez then had another chance to get his third, a calm passing move by Manchester United eventually found Nani, who played the Mexican through with a great ball, but he hit it wide. Tuncay had another half chance, he struck a volley towards goal but hit it straight into the ground and it bounced wide. United finished the game at a canter, Bolton will be cursing the fixture list but should have an easier time of it at home against Norwich next week. For Fergusons men however, theyll be happy to take on anyone in the world at the moment and are looking clear favourites to beat Villas-Boas Chelsea on the 18th.
