Match Report - West Ham 2-0 Newcastle - Payet Double Eases Hammers To Victory

The Magpies are now bottom of the Barclays Premier League...

A brace from Dimitri Payet saw West Ham United ease to a 2-0 win over Newcastle United at Upton Park. The attacker - who joined The Hammers for £10 million from Marseille during the summer transfer window - opened the scoring with an unstoppable curled effort from the edge of the area into Tim Krul's top right-hand corner, before adding a second three minutes after the restart following a bar shattering effort from debutant Victor Moses. The evening was a sorry one for Steve McClaren and his Magpies. The former England manager couldn't avenge THAT 3-2 defeat by Slaven Bili‡'s Croatia during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign while he has now overseen Newcastle's worst start to a season for 10-years. If things weren't bad enough for the away side's head coach, his team are now bottom of the Barclays Premier League with only two points, and two goals from their five matches played.
West Ham dominated from the off and led after just nine minutes as Payet's impressive start to Premier League life continued with an expert finish into the top right-hand corner. Following smart build-up from Mark Noble and Diafra Sakho, the Frenchman gave Tim Krul no chance from the edge of the area while he went close again soon after following positive play down the right from Chelsea loanee Moses. Daryl Janmaat, who was Newcastle's only attacking threat on the night, guided the visitors' first chance straight at Darren Randolph inside the area. He forced a couple more saves from the comfortable Randolph later in the evening as Newcastle huffed and puffed their way through the game. Moses had the chance to double West Ham€™s lead before the interval, screwing wide following a quick counter. New Hammers manager Bilic's match only soured by the sight of Angelo Ogbonna limping off late on in the first half. The hosts started the second half where they left off in the first and were rewarded when Payet doubled his tally following another dangerous counter off the back of a Newcastle free-kick. Moses collected the ball close to the half way line and drove for the Newcastle goal, showing immense strength and trickery to hold off a challenge before smacking the bar. Payet squeezed his rebound over the line despite the presence of Vurnon on the line. Janmaat's efforts aside - Newcastle's only other effort on goal came from a deflected Siem de Jong effort which, Randolph in the home goal tipped well over the bar. Back to the drawing board for McClaren who has games against Watford, Chelsea, and Manchester City to follow.
