Monaco Grand Prix Review

Rosberg Wins

Running quietly in 3rd was Red Bull protege Ricciardo, who now profited from Hamilton's slowing down up ahead. The Australian driver was pushing hard and catching Hamilton, whilst Ferrari's Fernando Alonso drove a lonely race in 4th. With the end of the race getting close, the battle down the field spiced up as Button overtook his team-mate Magnussen down the pit straight. Raikkonen attempted the same at the hairpin but locked up, collecting the McLaren and pushing both Scandinavians into the tyre barrier. In the resulting mess, Marussia's Jules Bianchi moved up the order and took 8th place. By the final few laps Rosberg had cemented his lead, lapping every car up to 4th place. This dominant performance was complemented by Hamilton's struggles, as the Briton fought to keep 2nd place. The controversy of Qualifying was definitely a factor in Hamilton's drive, as Rosberg had ensured he would retain the lead by qualifying on pole. Taking the chequered flag, Nico Rosberg won the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Lewis Hamilton by a margin of 8 seconds. For Rosberg, who had finished second behind Hamilton in the previous 4 races, the win at Monaco was an eye for an eye. Hamilton had dominated the season, but Rosberg showed he could take the fight to the 2008 champion. Ricciardo scored his 3rd ever podium finish, whilst Alonso took 4th ahead of Hulkenburg in 5th. Jenson Button completed the race in 6th, with Massa and Grosjean 7th and 8th, all three cars starting outside of the top ten. Drive of the day went to 9th placed driver Jules Bianchi, who scored the first points for Marussia in their 5 year history. Magnussen got out of the barriers and finished 10th. Childhood karting friends Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are now locked in a tight battle for the Formula 1 world championship. Earlier this season their racing had been close, but now tactics are coming in to play. Whichever perspective is taken on Rosberg's qualifying incident, he drove a stunning race to win Monaco for the second time. What is certain is that Lewis Hamilton will continue to push his German colleague, and next time he will set his sights on first place.
