Newcastle 0-2 Man City - 5 Things We Learned

4. Officially Clueless

Cheick Tiote's ferocious screamer was controversially ruled out in the first half, just when Newcastle were beginning to find a way back into the game. The Ivorian's shot from the edge of the box powered through a crowd of bodies, untouched, before nestling into the far corner of Joe Hart's goal. Cue wild celebrations, but they were short lived as the officials consulted with each other before agreeing to rule the goal out for offside. Replays showed that Yoan Gouffran had been retreating from the six yard box and whilst he was standing in an offside position, he didn't touch the ball or obstruct Hart's view. This opens up the old argument about what constitutes an 'active' player? Technology has already been brought in to deal with goal line incidents this season, could Tiote's disallowed goal spark a further call for the use of replays to help officials make the correct decision in game changing moments?
