Newcastle 1-0 Aston Villa - Player Ratings

Newcastle hosted Aston Villa at St James' Park this Sunday afternoon with the two sides separated by a late Loic Remy strike. Villa dominated for long periods of the game and enjoyed some good chances of their own but left Tyneside empty handed. At their post-match press conference both managers reflected on a game of mixed fortune. Lambert was understandably disappointed with the final result but was happy with his team's performance, singling out Ashley Westwood for particular praise. He confirmed that the midfielder had suffered a dead leg, which led to his withdrawal around the hour mark, but believed that Westwood had been the best player on the pitch up to that point. Alan Pardew was delighted that his team had managed to secure a much needed win, ending their long goal drought in the process. He acknowledged that Papiss Cisse had missed a 'sitter' in the first half before going on to praise the composure of striker Loic Remy, indicating that he was the only man on the pitch who could have come up with such a finish at that stage of the game. With both managers giving their thoughts on who turned in stand out performances, read on to see our player ratings and man of the match.
