Newcastle 2014-15 Season Review - 6 Best (And 6 Worst) NUFC Performances

4. Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Newcastle United (Capital One Cup Quarter-Final - December 17th, 2014)

Newcastle United supporters turned up in north London on the evening of December 17th, 2014, daring to dream. They had advanced to the Capital One Cup quarter-finals having knocked out holders Manchester City with a brilliant display at the Etihad, and they had triumphed at White Hart Lane just seven weeks previously. But things rarely work out like that for Newcastle United - and those dreams turned into festive nightmares just off Tottenham Court Road. Jak Alnwick, continuing to deputise in goal for the injured Tim Krul and Rob Elliot, was at fault for the first. The young keeper came for a cross he was never going to reach, only to allow Nabil Bentaleb to prod home the opener on 18 minutes (the exact time in which they had conceded during the 2-1 Premier League victory at White Hart Lane, incidentally). Although poor for the remainder of the first-half, Newcastle did not concede again - until 36 seconds after the re-start. Spurs attacked straight from kick-off, and Nacer Chaldi's precise effort effectively ended the contest there and then. The Magpies' evening continued to get worse though. Harry Kane smashed a third in, before even the hopeless Roberto Soldado managed to get on to the scoresheet just seconds after coming on as a substitute. Toon fans had already let themselves ponder a trip to Wembley in 2015 - but now they had to make the long journey back to the North East having seen their side capitulate. A devastating defeat.
