Newcastle 2014-15 Season Review - 6 Best (And 6 Worst) NUFC Performances

5. Queens Park Rangers 2-1 Newcastle United (Premier League - May 16th, 2015)

Newcastle's season hit its lowest point on May 16th - as the Magpies surrendered the lead against already-relegated Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road in the penultimate game of the Premier League season to lose their ninth match out of 10. It had all started so well for John Carver's men, who controlled the first-half - and even went ahead after 24 minutes, when Emmanuel Rivere netted his first goal for the club (albeit by inadvertently kicking the ball off his own standing foot and into the net). With a 1-0 lead at half-time the Magpies appeared comfortable - yet by the 61st minute they were behind, never to recover. First, Charlie Austin advanced down the right and whipped in a cross for Matt Phillips to nod in the equaliser after 54 minutes. Then, just past the hour mark, Tim Krul's horrendous clearance was picked up by Phillips, who laid the ball off to Leroy Fer 30 yards out. The midfielder then rattled in an unstoppable stunner which broke Newcastle's spirit. The Magpies never looked liked getting back into the game, despite having half-an-hour to do so. This result left Newcastle just two points and a single place above Hull City heading into the final game of the season - and the Magpies faced demotion to the Championship. Thankfully that didn't occur, but their capitulation in west London smacked of a side who simply weren't motivated enough.
