Newcastle 2014-15 Season Review - 6 Best (And 6 Worst) NUFC Performances

2. Newcastle United 2-1 Chelsea (Premier League - December 6th, 2014)

When table-toppers Chelsea arrived at St James' Park on December 6th, 2014, nobody gave the Magpies a chance. Jose Mourinho's side were undefeated in their first 14 Premier League matches of the season and they had looked simply unstoppable. Yet Newcastle rose to the occasion - and their top-scorer Papiss Cisse once again did the business by grabbing a wonderful brace. The first-half had proved to be a turgid affair and, in all honesty, Chelsea could have been 3-0 up inside 10 minutes - but they failed to take their chances. But, when goalkeeper Rob Elliot went off injured at half-time, Newcastle had to call upon youngster Jak Alnwick for his Premier League debut and it looked as though the Magpies may fold as a result in the second-half. Far from it. Instead, Sammy Ameobi made his way to the byline in the 57th minute and fizzed a low cross into the box which Gary Cahill failed to deal with, only for Cisse to poke home. Then, after Eden Hazard had rattled the post for Chelsea, Newcastle doubled their advantage on 78 minutes following a swift counter-attack, with Cisse able to slot into an empty net. Alnwick failed to deal with a set-piece in the 83rd minute and that allowed Didier Drogba to score (as he always does against Newcastle), setting up a tense finish, but the Magpies held on - and ensured Chelsea would not go the entire season unbeaten. A simply brilliant display.
