Newcastle: 6 Most Memorable Moments Against Leicester City

6. Leicester's First Premier League Win - 1996/97

As already alluded to, Newcastle had the frustrating honour in 1996 of becoming Leicester City's first ever Premier League scalp. Despite being a newly promoted side, the Foxes proved to be a thorn in Newcastle's side that season in both games, and while the return leg was far more exciting and rewarding for Newcastle fans, the October meeting was hugely disappointing. Having seen the league disappear out from between Kevin Keegan's fingers the May previously, Newcastle had invested big in Alan Shearer (and little in Des Hamilton for some reason) and expectations were high that the same kind of form would go into this season. Sadly, by the time the Magpies went to Filbert Street, Shearer had been ruled out for six games, and Casey Keller had decided to have his Ready Brek that morning, putting in one of the finest goalkeeping performances ever seen against Newcastle. Goals from Steve Claridge and Emile Heskey did the rest.
