Newcastle Boss John Carver Has A "Clear Conscience" About Charity Golf Day

The Newcastle United boss defends his actions ahead of a key week in the club's history.

Newcastle United head coach John Carver has defended attending a charity golf event on Monday - stating he has a "clear conscience" having helped raise more than £500,000 for a local heart foundation. The Magpies sit just two points and a single position above 18th-placed Hull City heading into the final weekend of the Premier League season and were beaten 2-1 at already-relegated Queens Park Rangers last Saturday. But Carver allowed his players both Sunday and Monday off before he attended the CHUF golf event at Close House on the latter.
And, defending his actions at the beginning of one of the most important weeks in the club's Premier League history, Carver said at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday:
"When you attend a charity golf day and make over half-a-million pounds, which will pay for five scanners for the local heart foundation - I have a clear conscience. "It's important to support local charity in the community. "Two years ago we got bad press for cancelling a charity event - you're damned if you do and damned if you don't."
Carver also revealed that he has told his players can they watch the wrestling but not the football this week - and that he is struggling to sleep at night. For all the latest NUFC News, Views and Transfers make sure to follow WhatCultureNUFC on Twitter and Facebook.
